# Your direction stays in your browser

The compass uses device orientation data in your browser to draw the dial. The current public tool does not send your heading or manual angle to the application server or request location automatically. True North and the Coordinates and Bearing tools request device location only when you choose their location button.

## Sensor permission

Some browsers ask for access to orientation sensors when you press “Start device compass.” You can decline and use the manual angle instead. Your browser or operating system controls that permission.

## Website requests

Opening a page sends an ordinary web request. Hosting and security infrastructure may record technical request details, such as your IP address, requested path, and browser information, in operational logs. The public pages do not create an application session cookie.

## Analytics and storage

We use self-hosted Plausible to count page visits. A small inline beacon sends the page URL, referring page, site domain and event name to our analytics collector. It does not set analytics cookies or include sensor readings, manual angles or coordinates.

True North coordinates remain in page memory. Coordinates are saved in localStorage only when you press “Save on this device”; “Clear saved location” removes that snapshot. The theme preference also uses localStorage. The site may cache the same public page HTML for all visitors; that cache contains no sensor reading.

## What stays on this device

Clearing this site's browser storage removes the saved position and theme preference. A private browsing session, another browser or another device has separate storage. If storage is blocked, theme changes can still work for the current page, but saved positions may be unavailable.

## Location providers and hosting

Your browser and operating system choose how to estimate a requested position, which may involve their own location providers. Online Compass does not select those providers or control their privacy settings. Ordinary page and image requests pass through our hosting and Cloudflare infrastructure; those requests are separate from the sensor and coordinate values kept in the page.
