# GPS coordinates

Read your location or convert coordinates. Saved positions stay in this browser.

## Device location

Your location has not been requested. You can use the converter below without permission.

Altitude is reported by your browser when available. The API uses the WGS84 ellipsoid as its height reference. Mean sea level and terrain elevation use different references; this tool does not convert between them.

## Decimal degrees to DMS

Enter a latitude and longitude to see degrees, minutes, and seconds. Negative values mean south or west.

Your converted coordinates will appear here.

## DMS to decimal degrees

Enter unsigned whole degrees and minutes, then seconds and a hemisphere. South and west produce negative decimal coordinates.

Your decimal coordinates will appear here.

One degree contains 60 minutes; one minute contains 60 seconds. Decimal degrees equal degrees + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600, with a negative sign for south or west. Six displayed decimal places describe rounding, not measured accuracy.

## What these values mean

Latitude measures north or south of the equator; longitude measures east or west of the prime meridian. The accuracy value is a radius reported by your device, not a guarantee that the coordinates are exact. A saved snapshot can become stale as soon as you move.

The browser may estimate position from satellite signals, Wi-Fi, or other available sources. It may omit altitude, speed, or travel direction entirely. Travel direction describes movement and does not tell you which way the top of your phone is pointing. For a device heading, use the [compass](https://onlinecompass.lol); for a route between two points, use the [bearing calculator](https://onlinecompass.lol/bearing).

### A coordinate conversion example

Latitude 40.5° becomes 40° 30′ 0″ N. Longitude −73.25° becomes 73° 15′ 0″ W. Convert that pair in either direction to check the hemisphere signs. At 90° latitude or 180° longitude, minutes and seconds must be zero.
